Third graders looked at the art of Eric Carle and created textural painted papers. They drew their choice of a baby animal and collaged the background with cut painted papers.

Third grade Selfies- Before and after the drawing lesson! 2018-19
In the first few weeks of the school year, I teach a self portrait unit to all the students. The photos below show the difference in my third graders drawings of their self portrait with a substitute and after my drawing lessons. First, we learn where to place the features on a face and the hair. Then, we talk about showing clues about our personality and interests with the clothes and background details.

Abstract Animals inspired by Paul Klee -4th grade
We read The Cat and the Bird by Geraldine Elschner, a whimsical story inspired by Klee’s paiinting. Students used waterbased oil pastels to create their work. They used geometric shapes to interpret the animal of their choice.

Students cut triangle shaped trees from painted papers, colored round orbs with crayons, and painted black skies with India ink.
